Brights are Back, Baby!

Fashion week may be behind us, but with Spring on the rise, we’re embracing bright vivid colours to add a pep to our step. Back in 2014, Vogue released an article by fashion news writer, Liana Satenstein who wanted to shift her perspective on her safe & subtle black-on-black wardrobe. She challenged herself to a daily dose of colour, prints and textures that she would typically shy away from. As the snow melts here in Toronto and the sky turns from dark grey to slightly lighter grey, this article felt more relevant than ever.

It can be easy to slip into a comfortable monochromatic grey/black ensemble without a thought – especially after being home for – oh I don’t know, two years! But the small extra step of pushing outside your comfort zone with colour can breathe new life into your WFH, office or coffee shop workspace.

In their article, Satenstein consults Constance Hart, a colour therapy expert from Conscious Colours to help understand how her wardrobe was shaping her mental health.

“If you aren’t feeling centred or secure, black can feel like a security blanket. For that reason, we see a lot of black in cities. In my work I try to help people move away from black because it can have a depressive quality to it,” says Hart. “Colour has an effect on our psyche, it’s always affecting us whether we are aware of it or not.”

Hot Tip: If you’re not into head-to-toe brights, try mixing it up with colourful accessories, or a bright lip.

Some Colour Theory:

Pink (a MORE fave): The colour of love, can open you up to self-love says Hart

Orange: The colour of resilience, can help to be more social

Bright Red: This colour can help to activate physical and emotional energy

Pale Blue: Tap into this colour for a calm, relaxing, or soothing moment

Green: Brings balance and can help centre us

Navy Blue: We like dark colours too! This one is good for Intuition

If you’d like to take Satenstein’s challenge, try wearing 5 colour-rich outfits back to back and monitor how you feel. Tried it? Let us know!
